    Before.After

While some people feel too many cooks spoil the soup, this empty nest couple in Evanston, Illinois dreamed of having a kitchen to prepare exotic meals together without bumping into each other on every chop, stir or flambé. Their original kitchen felt closed in, and a large eat-in area, no longer necessary with the kids out of the house, interrupted the flow.

The couple now ate most meals in the full dining room adjacent to the kitchen, so we eliminated the four-top table in the kitchen and mounted a cut out bistro tabletop onto a corner, creating an intimate space for the two of them to enjoy drinks or snacks while cooking together.

Removing the kitchen table allowed the L-shaped cabinet arrangement to become a U-shape, which maximized counter space. The new framless cabinets in a environmentally friendly Euro-foil finish, granite countertops and stainless steel appliances completely changed the feel of the kitchen.

In seven short weeks (three weeks design time, four weeks construction) and for around $27,000 total (including labor, materials and design time) this happy couple was whipping up intricate Asian and Cajun recipes in their dream custom kitchen with an entry level price tag.

Luxurious spaces can include environmentally friendly features. Emily Mackie Norris and Inspired Interiors incorporate ‘green’ features into your space while maintaining a gorgeous and elegant interior. Few designers can create spaces that are stunning while comfortable, unique while within your budget and ‘green’ while decadent. It’s only a masterpiece if it represents your authentic personality and lifestyle. Dare to know perfection.
    1. By blending English architectural details into a space for a young family of four, Inspired Interiors provided an inviting environment for cooking and entertaining. A custom-designed hood, vintage hardware, reclaimed lighting and recycled marble countertops balance the warmth of the English countryside with this modern Chicago home.
    2. Both custom-designed by Emily Mackie Norris, the rich texture of a coconut palm breakfast table and the delicate lighting of an Italian chandelier were crafted with this client’s style in mind. The subtle incorporation of a dark alder desk area provides a much-needed space for the family’s active lifestyle.

It’s easy to get inspired by color, shape and function just walking down a city street or flipping through a fashion magazine. Inspiration is everywhere. From a bright blue sky or warm yellow sunrise to a modern high rise or country church. But how can you transfer the inspiration from the outside world to your home? One way is to try deciding what type of architecture and shapes inspire you. Love the straight and sleek lines of a skyscraper? Try adding stainless steel in either your countertops or appliances. Perhaps you enjoy the texture and country elegance of paneling. Try adding beadboard to backspash, island, or wainsscoting. Inspiration is personal but it’s also easy to feel overwhelmed deciding what to use and how to put options together in your space. Let Inspired Interiors help focus your inspiration into home design that reflects you– inside out.

    Park Ridge 3-day Makeover

PARK RIDGE, IL – Almost four years after moving into her home Mrs. Jones* had not gotten around to updating the dining room. Despite the change in furniture, the room still reflected of the style of previous homeowner, not this busy working mom. With an upcoming family celebration on the calendar, something needed to be done!

It all began one Saturday simply with help on color selection but what resulted later was a beautiful room transformation. Despite an overall vague idea of her stylistic desires, one thing Mrs. Jones did know was that she was tired of the cranberry red color and wanted anything other than red. She really wanted a color that was interesting and different from what everyone else was choosing. Inspired Interiors delivered by using Benjamin Moore’s “Mink Violet” on the walls. See what other changes Inspired Interiors made.

Q: I have selected a few Benjamin Moore paint samples and applied a dozen or so in small 12″ squares on the wall in my room. I am so confused when viewing this grid of paint options. I have no idea how to determine what color works for the room. Help!
A: I see clients doing this same activity time and time again. The problem that you are having is that you have visually overwhelmed yourself. When I select the right shade of a color, I grab a large white poster board. Then I take small samples of all of the finishes in the room: carpet sample, wood sample, tile sample, countertop sample and so on. By using the white poster board I can minimize all visual distraction and focus on the finishes that exist in the room. After compiling all of the finishes, I can start to look at small paint samples that might work. Since the colors of the room are all present on my white background I can easily run through options and see what color fits perfectly with the composition. You may also want to look at the color under the exact lighting that will be in the room. Different types of lighting will change the paint color easily. Don’t make the mistake of looking at the paint color in the hardware store under the horrific fluorescent lighting, and go home to your soft can lighting. The colors will change under different types of lighting. Lighting inherently has its own color (fluorescents add blue/grey, incandescents add yellow).  Also, look at the color during the night and during the day. Daylight or lack of day light will change the color, and you want something that meets both times of day. Happy painting!
