Historically, the removal of unnecessary barriers has been an effective strategy for promoting harmony amongst the people. Tearing down the dividing wall between the kitchen and living room in this vintage Ravenswood home created a multi-functional area enjoyed by the residents, young and old. The fireplace, previously visible only from the living room, is now the focal point joining together the living room, open concept kitchen, entertainment area and work space.
Inspired Interiors custom designed the two-tiered island with a cooking zone and an eating zone. Yes, the table is permanently attached to the island–and to the floor. This space saving innovation delivered on two, often conflicting, homeowner requests: free up floor space and increase storage.
The one big splurge, handmade tiles from a craftswoman in California, added a subtle oomph to the kitchen backsplash with their MC Escher-esque repetitive onion pattern. Keeping the appliances and sink in the same locations kept costs down to allow for the exquisite tiles.

Alternate History Quote:
“If you seek peace, if you seek an open concept kitchen and living space for your family, if you seek a focal point for entertaining: Come here to this house! Homeowners, open this space! Homeowners, tear down this wall!”
~Ronald Reagan, Interior Decorator (at heart)
